What Can NSLS Do For You?

Please take a few minutes to complete our needs assessment survey. This survey is geared to provide us with information about which services our members value, as well as the challenges you face. In light of the recent budget cut and delay in funding, we want to make sure we are still doing what's most important to our members of all types. NSLS Advocacy Challenge Winners Announced

In 2009, all NSLS public library directors were challenged to step up their advocacy efforts to the state and national level. They received points for engaging in and recording advocacy activity. Congratulations to those with the highest scores: Cynthia Fuerst, Vernon Area Public Library District; Carole Medal, Gail Borden Public Library District; Richard Lee, Waukegan Public Library; and Carolyn Anthony, Skokie Public Library. Help Recently Unemployed, Polish and Russian Patrons at Your Library

Make the library experience better for your patrons. On February 9, Helping Others Cope with the Challenges of Job Loss Amid Economic Crisis will offer advice on how to best address the emotional needs of those who come to your library asking for help with job and economic issues. And Providing Library Services to Polish and Russian Residents on March 18 will help you to discover the cultural values that impact the way Polish and Russian residents view the public library, how to assess the needs of these residents, and how to design library services to meet those needs. Library Support Staff Certification Applications Available

ALA-APA began accepting applications from potential candidates interested in achieving library support staff certification (LSSC). This new certification program will help library support staff achieve recognition for current and new skills and abilities, and increase access to continuing education opportunities. The LSSC program is open to any library support staff person with a high-school diploma or its equivalent and the equivalent of at least one year of full-time experience in a library within the last five years. Picturing America Programming Grants

A new grant opportunity is available for public libraries that received the NEH’s Picturing America collection of American artwork. Grants of $2,000 will be distributed to 30 public libraries to support public programs that highlight the Picturing America collection. To be eligible, the proposed program or program series must feature humanities content and include use of the Picturing America collection. All programs must take place July 1, 2010 – January 31, 2011 and be open to public audiences. Application deadline is March 31.
