Members' Corner

December 2005

Keep up on the achievements of your colleagues. Member's Corner will publish the first Friday of each month.

Hurricane Relief

NSLS has adopted the Jefferson Parish Library in Metairie, LA on behalf of NSLS libraries who wish to help these libraries who have suffered so much as a result of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. We are in almost weekly contact with Jefferson Parish Library officials and they are very grateful for the many boxes of books and checks that we've sent them. Jefferson Parish Libraries are also reaching out to the patrons of the New Orleans Public Library by dropping nonresident fees and is issuing “Katrina library cards” to anyone in the area. Officials at both libraries have now agreed on a reciprocal borrowing agreement that will be implemented just before Christmas as their gift to New Orleans. Additionally the libraries plan to have joint programming.

Below is a list of what's been donated during November. Check the October and November Member's Corner for previous announcements. We commend all of our libraries for being so helpful and supportive during this difficult time for those struck by the hurricanes. To be included in next month's Member's Corner, contact Christina Johnson.

  • The Friends of the Cary Area Public Library are contributing $3,000 of their October book sale's income (about 95% of their sale's income) to the Friends of Jefferson Parish.
  • Des Plaines Public Library staff raised $193.00 via a staff bake sale for Katrina relief. They are also signed up to adopt a library through ALA.
  • Gail Borden Public Library District's foundation will be contributing a portion of the proceeds received at the "Dinos on Parade" auction which will be held at GBPL on December 2 to the Jefferson Parrish libraries.
  • The Friends of the Grayslake Library are donating $1,000 from the November booksale and 15% of all sales (March sale, June paperback sale, and the ongoing lobby sale) for the next year.
  • Warren-Newport Public Library is collecting cash donations at the circulation desk to donate. In addition, they are planning a fundraising event on Jan. 31 to include bedtime stories for kids as well as book talks and author readings for adults. Cookies and cocoa will be served and free will donations will be accepted. Staff will wear comfy clothes to work and donate to the pot, similar to Lee National Denim Day.

Holiday Giving

  • Arlington Heights Memorial Library has added collection points outside of the library for their holiday book drive, making it more convenient to donate the gift of reading this holiday season. New collection points include Arlington Heights businesses and elementary schools.
  • Cook Memorial Public Library will once again serve as a drop-off point for gifts of food for the needy. Food for Fines will be accepted at Cook Memorial Library and Evergreen Interim Library from November 25 through December 30.  Each can, jar or box of food donated will cancel $1.00 or less of library fines.  Food will be donated to local food pantries. Cook Memorial Public Library will also join local campaigns conducted in nearly 500 communities in all 50 states to collect new, unwrapped toys and games for the U.S. Marine Corps Toys for Tots drive. Donations will be collected in Toys for Tots barrels until December 22 in the lobby of the library. In addition, learn more about their "Donate a Book Drive" by reading the column on Sarah Long's site.
  • The Vernon Area Public Library District will be assisting the Vernon Township's Adopt-A Family program by accepting donations of gift cards to local area stores. These cards will be given to the Vernon Township office to provide financially distressed families with the opportunity to receive holiday gifts. Gift card donations will be accepted at the library's Patron Services Desk through December 11, 2005.
