Member's Corner: October 2006

Member's Corner articles publish in the nsls.info weekly e-newsletter on the first Friday of each month. It is a place for libraries to share the successes of their library as well as the accomplishments of staff. Contact Christina Johnson to share your news.

Award

  • Miriam Lytle, Gail Borden Public Library District, was awarded the Carol Anne Robbins Scholarship. The $3,000 scholarship for tuition and expenses is intended to encourage the pursuit of librarianship.

  • Bob Watson, Lake Villa Public Library District, was the recipient of WebJunction’s “Contributor of the Year” award.

In Print

Elisa Topper, Dundee Township Public Library District, is taking over the "What's new in libraries" column published in New Library World from Sarah Long. New Library World is an international reviewed journal published six times per year which aims to chart the latest developments for the profession.

Retirement

Cindy (Infantino) Serikaku will retire from Lake Forest Library on November 1. Cindy has worked in Lake County public libraries since 1974. She will become affiliated with the Chicago-based Arabesque Foundation for Arab Culture.

Events

  • Highland Park Public Library will be hosting Sandra Roberts, a middle school teacher from Whitwell, Tennessee, on Thursday, October 26. Ms. Roberts has a remarkable story to tell, and she'll share that story with the community. It's the story of the Paper Clip Project, an after school study on the Holocaust that turned into an invaluable lesson on tolerance, understanding and acceptance.   • Lake Villa Public Library District will be holding its 2nd CLUE® Tournament and Silent Auction. This year’s auction will feature autographed items from Melissa Etheridge, Denzel Washington and Orlando Bloom. They also have auction items from the Chicago Bulls, Chicago Wolves, Kane County Cougars, Chicago Rush, and Arlington Park as well as local donations have been received from Twisted Cow and Curves of Lindenhurst.   • Zion-Benton Public Library is hosting a quilt exhibit through October 10. Quilts made by Illinois librarians are on display in the computer lab.
  • On Saturday, October 14, Zion-Benton Public Library is presenting Library Palooza; a day to discover and celebrate the library. Special programs, electronic resources demonstrations, Friends' creme de la creme book sale, amnesty & past fine forgiveness. People will receive one ticket at each station they attend. The tickets will be put into the prize drawing. The more stations, the more tickets, the more chances to win.
  • Zion-Benton Public Library is hosting their second annual Just Desserts @ the Library mystery theatre. Sir Arthur Conan Hoyle is the wealthy eccentric who has purchased the library and is remodeling it to offer something for everyone. Someone offs him. Who? The audience will watch six top detectives do their best investigating: Sam Slayed, Agatha Mystry, Hemlock Bones, Nancy Prude, Hercules Perot, and Kutesey Millstone.

Library Cards

Residents of the Algonquin Area Public Library District are now able to sign up for library cards online.Within three days of submitting the application online, the library card will be available for pick at the main library or the branch. If an e-mail address is provided, the library will e-mail the applicant his or her card number so they can place holds even sooner than the three days.

Focus Groups

Zion-Benton Public Library is conducting focus groups with Black parents and children. For the last year they have counted the race/ethnicity of the kids who come to library programs. They have observed that Black families are under-represented and they'd like to find out why that is.
