Awards McHenry-Nunda Public Library District, Stevenson Elementary School Library, and Zion Benton Public Library District were winners of the We The People "Freedom" Bookshelf awards. Winners will receive free copies of 15 classic books from the We the People Bookshelf project. The theme of this year's bookshelf is "freedom." For full details, read ALA's press release. Exhibit During the month of August, Indian Trails Public Library District is hosting an exhibit featuring paintings by patients who have Alzheimer’s or other types of dementia. Diane Newell Activity Coordinator at The Claremont, says, “Painting is an important part of the residents’ therapy because it gives them the opportunity to reminisce about past experiences, and focus on colors and the enjoyment of creating something special.” Partnership Pita Inn and WA-PHAGETTI'S Pizza in Wheeling have partnered with Indian Trails Public Library for the International Fair on August 7. The line-up includes bands, folk dances performed by students from the Polish School in Wheeling, and activities for the entire family. Column Elisa Topper, Dundee Township Public Library District, writes a montly column for American Libraries, entitled "Working Knowledge." New Service A cooperative effort by the Schaumburg Township District Library and the Schaumburg Township Disabled Deaf Services called Video Relay Service is available to deaf and hard of hearing library patrons. It provides individuals the ability to communicate in American Sign Language to a hearing person via a video interpreter on a computer. There is no additional cost to call anywhere within the United States and certain countries. ALA Presentation Fran Roehm, Skokie Public Library, presented a program about trends in business and career services in libraries with Marydee Ojala, Editor of Online magazine, entitled Online for Business: Trends and Resources for Public Libraries.
