Member's Corner: July 2006

Member's Corner articles publish in the nsls.info weekly e-newsletter on the first Friday of each month. It is a place for libraries to share the successes of their library as well as the accomplishments of staff. Contact Christina Johnson to share your news.

New Dean of Libraries

NSLS Board Member Christopher Stewart has been appointed as Illinois Institute of Technology's (IIT) dean of libraries. In his role as dean, Stewart will provide leadership, planning, and vision for IIT libraries to support the university’s teaching, learning, and research activities. Read announcement.

New Library Directors

  • Mary Beth Campe has been selected as the new director of Ela Area Public Library District . For the past 16 years, Campe has worked at the Palatine Public Library District. Most recently, Campe served as the library’s assistant director of outreach services and popular materials.
  • Janet Parker, a librarian with extensive experience in libraries in Northern California, has been named director of the North Chicago Public Library.
  • Mary Pergander has been selected as the new Deerfield Public Library Administrative Librarian. She has a strong background in library administration and other leadership positions. Most recently, she was Director of the Lake Bluff Public Library.

Retirement

Jack Hicks, Deerfield Public Library, is retiring after 34 years with the library. Read Sarah Long's Daily Herald column about Jack.

Award

The Skokie Public Library youth services department received the 2006 ASCLA/KLAS/NOD Award for providing services for people with disabilities. The award is presented by ASCLA and the National Organization for Disabilities.

Anniversary

McHenry Public Library District celebrated its 70th anniversary earlier this year.

Promotional Materials Selected for Share the Wealth Competition

The Library Public Relations Council (LPRC) recently selected the work of Ela Area Public Library District’s graphic artists Dianne Rose and Jennifer Nickels for distribution to the LPRC membership. Their winning entries were displayed at the ALA Conference in New Orleans in June.

In Print

  • Lesley Williams's article "Making ‘E’ Visible" was published in the 6/15/06 edition of Library Journal and was also selected as the Library Link of the Day for 6/23/06. Lesley is the Head of Reference and Periodical Services at the Evanston Public Library. Read her article online.
  • Kathy Caudill answers "What Does a Library Trustee Do?" in the Summer 2006 issue of The Voice from ALTA. Kathy is a member of the Ela Area Library District and North Suburban Library System boards.

New Service

Cook Memorial Public Library District is now offers patrons the option of receiving an email when holds are ready for pick-up, before items are due, if an item is overdue, and before a library card expires. The first day email notification was open to the public, patrons signed up for the program at a rate of one person every two minutes.

Redesigned Web Site

McHenry Public Library District has launched a redesigned Web site. They have received favorable reactions from patrons. The site features better usability and is more attractive.

Monetary Donation

McHenry Public Library District enoyed the benefit of a weekend fundraiser hosted by Cousins Subs, in which a portion of sales were donated to the library. The money was used to purchase 27 additional items to add to the library's collection.

One Book, One Community

The Rich Part of Life by Chicago author Jim Kokoris has been chosen for this summer’s One Book, One Community program at the Vernon Area Public Library District. The author will visit the library to discuss his book on Thursday evening, July 20, at 7 p.m.

Summertime in the School Library

Several years ago, NSLS awarded a mini-grant to Millburn School for Summertime in the School Library, resulting in Millburn LRC providing students and teachers in the summer school program with access to school library services. Summertime in the School Library has been in effect each summer since being awarded the grant. Every year, including this year, the Millburn LRC is the location for community picnics.

Library Funding

State Senator Susan Garrett obtained a state grant of $120,000 for the Lake Bluff Public Library to replace its furnace and implement additional structural modifications. Read Sen. Garrett's announcement.
