- Joy Kennedy, Northwest Community Hospital, recently
had her letter to the editor published in the June 21, 2005 edition
of The Wall Street Journal.

Nancy Heggem, Palatine Public Library District trustee and
NSLS board member, published a poem in Falling in Love Again.
She was also a featured reader at the publishing kick off during
the Printers Row Fest.
Members
Who Presented/Moderated at ALA
- Susan Dennison and Julia Johnas, Highland Park Public Library,
"Traveling Exhibitions: Keys to Success." The program described
the essential elements of hosting a successful traveling exhibit,
from developing community partnerships to soliciting sponsorships
and creating exciting programs for the public. The Highland
Park Public Library hosted the "Forever Free: Abraham Lincoln's
Journey to Emancipation" exhibition in 2004. This exhibit
is available to another 60 libraries through ALA's Public Programs
Office. The deadline for applications is October 2005.
Highland Park Public Library was one of the winners of the 2005
Best of Show competition in the Special Programs/Events category
for the brochure that was developed to promote the exhibit and
related events. Highland Park Public Library's exhibition
success story will be featured in the upcoming Neal-Schuman publication,
Grants for Libraries: a How-to-do-it Manual.

Plaines Public Library, "Theory into Practice II: Organizational
Development"
- Judy Napier, Schaumburb Township District Library, moderated
"Hear Here: Audiobook Trends in Libraries." The
PLA AV Committee cosponsored this program—focusing on
the changes in audiobooks and the development of downloadable
audio—fwith YALSA and the Audio Publishers Association.
Nearly 300 people attended the two-hour program that included
Robin Whitten, editor of Audiofile magazine; Jenny
Levine, Internet Development Specialist and founder of Listen
Illinois; Claudia Weissman, vice president of Overdrive;
Jim Peterson, National Accounts Manager from Recorded Books;
and Scott Brick a famous narrator sponsored by Books on Tape.
- Amy Alession and Gail Tobin, Schaumburg Township District Library, arranged for teen participation in the conference. The teens participated in the YALSA Best of the Best Preconference on Friday, including speaking for a half hour about what they like to read and why, and discussion in the book selection groups.
On Sunday, two teens participated with Amy in a panel on reluctant readers, and two others participated in a panel on Intellectual Freedom with Sharon Ball, NSLS. On Monday night, a group of six teens went to the exhibits then to help host the Printz Award ceremony.
