Member's Corner: May 2006

Member's Corner articles publish in the nsls.info weekly e-newsletter on the first Friday of each month. It is a place for libraries to share the successes of their library as well as the accomplishments of staff. Contact Christina Johnson to share your news.

50th Anniversary Celebration

In commemoration of the Village of Schaumburg's 50th Anniversary, the Schaumburg Township District Library sponsored an online scavenger hunt of their Local History Digital Archives. Titled, "Turrets, Tornadoes & Tombstones," the scavenger hunt was both an exploration of Schaumburg history and an introduction to the library's digital archives. The adult grand prize was two tickets to the New Year's Eve Anniversary Ball and the young person's grand prize was a $50 gift certificate to Borders.

Event that Quacked Everyone Up

At the April 20 movie showing of "March the Penguins" at the Dundee Township Public Library, Director Elisa Topper had the courage to show up as—you guessed it—a six-foot tall penguin! The evening marked the kick-off for the library's first movie shown to an audience under a public rights performance license purchased by the Friends of the Library. The Friends also bought a popcorn machine, and were on hand to serve bags of popcorn and lemonade in the meeting room, which had been transformed into a movie theater. A gift basket worth $100 of movie type treats and gift certificates was raffled off to the 80+ movie goers along with 25 minature stuffed penguins. Staff dressed in black and white, and guests were encouraged to show up in costume as their favorite celebrity. The Head Penguin was not alone as she greeted guests and wandered through the library: she was joined by Ginger Rogers, Fred Astaire and an assortment of other celebrities for a fun evening, one of many to come.
