Donations Received

  • Office Depot gave the Algonquin Area Public Library District $500 for supplies at the new Algonquin Office Depot grand opening. Office Depot is new to the community and wanted to start off right away by giving back to their community.
  • Wal-mart of Algonquin donated $500 to Algonquin Area Public Library District for the purchase of two wheelchairs and two walkers. Patrons with disabilities and older patrons will have better ease of access at both the main library and the branch.

Film Series

DesPlaines was chosen as one of fifty public and academic libraries nationwide as pilot sites for the documentary film viewing and discussion series The World War I Years: America Becomes a World Power. "This 6-week library program features scholar-led lectures, documentary film screenings, and readings, and discussions of an important period that helped shape America in the twentieth century." Exhibit

In honor of Asian Pacific Month, Indian Trails Public Library District is sponsoring a Korean Art Exhibit featuring contemporary paintings and prints from the Andrew Bae Gallery in Chicago. This exhibit runs May 5 through May 29 and is available for viewing during regular library hours. The exhibit is free to the public. For more info, visit the library's Web site.

Competition

The Library Public Relations Council (LPRC) recently selected materials designed by Ela Area Public Library’s graphic artists Dianne Rose and Jennifer Nickels for LPRC’s “Share the Wealth” competition. The winning entries will be displayed at the American Library Association Conference in Chicago this June.

Grant

Cook Memorial Public Library District was one of 436 organizations awarded an SBC Excelerator Grant. The library received the grant to purchase three interactive Web-based products to expand patrons' abilities to access library services.

Letters About Literature Contest Winner

Secretary White has announced the Illinois winners of the annual Letters About Literature contest. One of the winners, Matthew Levine, won in Level III category for grades 9-12 and is a student at NSLS member Evanston Township High School. His letter was to Lance Armstrong, author of It's Not About the Bike.
