Member's Corner: April 2006

Member's Corner articles publish in the nsls.info weekly e-newsletter on the first Friday of each month. It is a place for libraries to share the successes of their library as well as the accomplishments of staff. Noted achievements include members who have been published, received awards, have been quoted in an article, and more. Bookmobile Heads to New Orleans

“Gertie” the Waukegan Public Library’s bookmobile left Waukegan for Jefferson Parish, Louisiana via a transport truck on Friday, March 17. The bookmobile is being donated by the library to the Jefferson Parish library system as part of the hurricane relief effort. Funds to pay for the transportation were donated by local individuals including Robert Trambino, with the bulk being donated by the Gail Borden Public Library District Foundation. Exhibits

  • Gail Borden Public Library District is one of 63 libraries to be selected to host a new tour of "Forever Free: Abraham Lincoln's Journey to Emancipation," an exhibit which reexamines President Lincoln’s thoughts about slavery throughout his political career and the conditions which led to the Emancipation Proclamation. "Forever Free" will be on exhibit at Gail Borden from April 17 through May 30, 2008. The exhibit will be enhanced by exciting programming, school tours, and more.   • Hundreds of pieces of art, pottery and sculpture decorated the walls and display cases of the Dundee Township Public Library during March as art students from the Dundee Crown High School showed off their creativity. The annual event is a juried show, and gives the students a venue to present their work to the entire community.

Award

Skokie Public Library, Youth Services Department, is the 2006 recipient of the Association of Specialized and Cooperative Library Agencies (ASCLA) ASCLA/KLAS/NOD Award. This award is given to a library organization that has provided services for people with disabilities. Read full press release on ALA's site.

Welcome

  • Sarah M. Pritchard has agreed to serve as Charles Deering McCormick University Librarian at Northwestern, beginning in September. She succeeds David Bishop. Widely recognized in the profession for her accomplishments, Sarah Pritchard will bring to this critical position at Northwestern a wealth of experience at the Library of Congress, Smith College, and the University of California, Santa Barbara, (UCSB) where she has served as University Librarian since 1999.
  • Mark Zera has agreed to serve as Associate Dean of Libraries in the Resource Learning Center at Elgin Community College. Prior to joining the Administration at Elgin Community College, Mr. Zera served as the Director of the Plum Creek Library System in Worthington, Minnesota. Mr. Zera has also served as the System Wide Area Network Services Director for the Suburban Library System where he directed all phases of operations for library consortiums.

Programs and Special Events

  • Popular mystery writer, Susan Wittig Albert, will visit the Wauconda Area Library on Friday, April 14 at 10 a.m. to speak about her book, A Dilly of a Death, and the art of the mystery writing process. Susan Wittig Albert is the nationally known creator of the critically-acclaimed China Bayle herbal mysteries. Albert’s novels have catapulted her into national bestseller circles and onto must-read booklists across the country. Ms. Albert will speak about her work, answer questions and sign books, which are available for purchase at Barnes and Noble in Deer Park at 20600 North Rand Road in the Deer Park Town Center.
  • Fremont Public Library District hosted best selling author Barbara D'Amato, who shared her tips on writing and publishing a novel. Following her talk, D'Amato signed her books.
  • Evanston Public Library hosted Adam Langer, author of The Washington Story and Crossing California, for a reading and discussion.

Learning a New Language

Staff at the Dundee Township Public Library are learning to speak Spanish at weekly classes offered on site. Representatives from the circulation, reference, media, childrens, and programming departments are developing a basic library-oriented vocabulary so that they can interact more effectively with patrons who speak little or no English.
