Community Involvement

Lake Villa District Library is co-sponsoring the 5th annual Family Fun Run/Walk along with Friends of the Lake Villa District Library, Lindenhurst Park District, Vista Surgery and Treatment Center, the Village of Lindenhurst, Linden Plaza Merchants Council, Kiwanis Club of Lindenhurst - Lakes Area, and the Lake Villa Parks and Recreation Committee. The walk will be held on April 23.

Training

NSLS members Elizabeth Crane of Round Lake Area Public Library District and Hector Marino of Des Plaines Public Library will be speaking at the Empowering Library Staff to Meet the Technology Needs of Spanish. The workshops teach how to build strong community partnerships and collaborate with the Spanish-speaking community to increase access to public computers and resources.

Awards

Great Lakes Naval Hospital Medical Library won first place in the 2004 National Medical Librarians Month (NMLM) Creative Promotions Award contest, using the “Come Borrow Our Power Tools” theme. The library staff wore bright yellow hard hats and carpenter’s aprons and visited other departments in the hospital to build relationships. Equipped with a traveling cart, library staff presented the hospital’s medical professionals with a sampling of the resources available in the library’s collections. The staff also used the NMLM theme to decorate the display case in the main lobby entrance of the hospital and created their own posters that read “Buzz Saw Your Way through Our CD-ROMs on Pediatrics & Orthopedics” and “Drill Your Way to Resources—Use OVID.”

Fundraiser

Des Plaines Public Library, together with the Rotary Club of Des Plaines, will be hosting a fundraiser on April 16. The "Do the Dewey...Fundraiser [361.706]" will be an after hours party featuring food, live music, interactive programs, and raffle.
