The auction, featuring items from Melissa Etheridge, Steven Spielberg, Denzel Washington, Orlando Bloom and many of the Chicago sports teams, will open at 11 a.m. on Monday, February 12 and close at 4 p.m. on Saturday, February 17. Skokie Reads! From the moment Mayor George Van Dusen declared November 2006 to be “Skokie Reads! Month”, Skokie Public Library initiated a series of events meant to celebrate the power of reading in our lives. Similar in Spirit to the One City, One Book idea popular at many libraries, Skokie felt that due to the diverse nature and eclectic reading tastes of our patrons, we would stress reading in general rather than focus on one particular title. Another goal was to reach out to the community and touch residents who were not regular library users. To this end the Book Drop Project delivered over 1200 hundred books in boxes to various businesses, stores and offices. Patrons who discovered and kept these books which sported the distinctive Skokie Reads logo were encouraged to send in book reviews which will be the foundation for a patron based database of favorite reads. TV Asia Bureau Chief Vandana Jhinigan interviewed and filmed the Balodyan School, a group of 30 students who recreated this historical times with songs and skits. The Balodyan School is under the tutelage of Ms. Vidya Nahar. Students ages 5 through 14 , presented a program of songs, stories and dances. The presentation was performed in Hindi and Marathi, with translation in English. More than 125 community residents attended this celebration, which is considered a very important holiday both in India and throughout the world. Super Bowl Fever While the Chicago Bears huddle for their Feb. 4 Super Bowl match-up against the Indianapolis Colts, staff at the Warren-Newport Public Library in Gurnee are gearing up for the big day in big ways. Ever ready to give directions on the road to discovery, librarians have selected and displayed a wide range of books and DVDs on all things football, Bears highlights, stars past and present, game strategies, and films. The library challenges you to prepare for the ultimate gridiron contest by being tenaciously curious. How are the Bears, Cubs and Illini teams related in history? What are the words to “Bear Down Chicago Bears” and “Super Bowl Shuffle”? Who built Soldier Field and when? What’s a tasty bean dip recipe? What college did Robbie Gould attend? And what’s with Roman numerals, anyway?
Friendly Super Bowl Wager The Gail Borden Public Library District and Beech Grove Public Library in Beech Grove, IN are supporting their Super Bowl-bound football teams by challenging each other but in library-type fashion. No edible prizes for these folks as they vie for homemade video tapes and books. The losing library director will dress in opposition colors following the game, their staff will make a tribute video for the winning team library and two books will be donated to the winning library.
