Member's Donating Funds for Illinois Library Day

The members of the Financial Committee for the Illinois Library Day 2006 have asked for donations to help cover costs of the Illinois Library Day. A large crowd is this year on March 1 and several activities are planned. In addition to the visits to legislators, there will be a march from the Lincoln Presidential Library to a rally in front of the Capitol, pictures, continuing education events, and others. NSLS member libraries have pledged donations:

  • Arlington Heights Memorial Library
  • Des Plaines Public Library
  • Friends of Fox Lake Public Library District
  • Gail Borden Public Library District
  • Glencoe Public Library
  • Indian Trails Public Library District
  • Park Ridge Public Library
  • Skokie Public Library
  • Waukegan Public Library

Awards

  • Ela Area Public Library received a Library with the Partnership Award from the Lake Zurich Area Chamber of Commerce for creating special partnerships and alliances in the business community that result in positive change.
This is the second consecutive year the Library received this honor.
  • Skokie Public Library was recently awarded the ASCLA award for it's Come on In program for children with disabilities. The program will be featured on Channel 2.

Special Programs

  • Gail Borden Public Library District hosted the unveiling of the newest 2006 first-class 39 cent stamps, Favorite Children's Book Animals. The event included Elgin Postmaster, Diane Tindle, and Connie Neale, superintendent of U-46 schools; costumed Wild Thing and Curious George characters; many animal and stamp activities in honor of the occasion; Children’s author/artist Kevin Luthardt; an activity station within the library for each of the eight book characters, and more.
  • The Lake Forest Library is embarking on a three-month exploration of international culture, from January-April.  Thanks to funding from Friends of Lake Forest Library, they are able to offer a rich variety of programs for high school/college students and adults, in cooperation with numerous community organizations. They are calling this series "CrossCurrents"; a full schedule is available online.

In Print

  • Every year Library Journal has a February issue devoted to the spring baseball line up of new books. Paul Kaplan from Lake Villa District Library is the co-reviewer for the spring wrap up. Also during the month of February, the baseball Hall of Fame will vote to add a player from the old Negro Leagues. One of the players who may be nominated is the late Chicagoan Ted “Double Duty” Radcliffe, who before he passed away last year at the age of 103 was thought to be the oldest player alive. Mr. Radcliffe visited the Lake Villa District Library in 1997 through a grant from the original North Suburban Library Foundation.
  • The Pioneer Press has started a new feature called “Currents,” a monthly in-depth article that runs paper-wide. They launched it January 11-12 with Book Clubs. The writer called here in October looking for contact information for our member libraries. Three of our public library members are prominently featured in the main article: Debbie Hoffman @ Warren-Newport; Vivian Mortensen @ Park Ridge, Lesley Williams @ Evanston. Each local edition also lists book groups in the area.
