Member's Corner: January 2007

Amy Alessio, Schaumburg Township District Library, is the co-author of A Year of Programs for Teens. This month-by-month guide is available through ALA.

New Staff

  • Joan Battley has accepted the Library Director position at North Chicago Public Library. She previously ran the Youth Services department at the library for several years.
  • Karolyn Nance has accepted the position of Director of the Fox River Grove Public Library starting in January of 2007. Nance has been employed by Illinois Libraries for the past 19 years. Most recently, Nance served as the Youth Services Manager at the Fremont Public Library District.
  • Catherine Thompson has accepted the position of Library Director for the Lake Bluff Library starting January 27. Thompson was previously the Library Director of Chilmark Free Public Library in Chilmark, Massachusetts.
  • Melissa Henderson has accepted the position of Head of Children's Services at the Glencoe Public Library starting in January of 2007.

Awards

  • The City of Elgin Human Relations Commission named the Gail Borden Public Library as the 2007 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Humanitarian award recipient based on the library's exemplary achievements and service to the Elgin Community.
  • Gail Borden Public Library staff members recently traveled to Waukegan to receive a Lieutenant Governor Award for Excellence in Downtown Revitalization for GIANTS/Dinos on Parade in the special event category during the annual Illinois Main Street Conference.

Exhibit

The Highland Park Public Library will be exhibiting a life-size version of the Declaration of Tolerance in January. The Declaration will be on display beginning January 15, Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Patrons are invited to sign the Declaration, pledging to respect those with different beliefs and backgrounds. New Feature

Arlington Heights Memorial Library has added vlogs to their site. The vlogs feature library staff and often the opening shot will feature different newsmakers and residents in the community. New vlogs will appear weekly to alert library customers to new services and programs.

Donation

IpHorgan Ltd. recently donated $5,000 to the Foundation for Indian Trails Public Library District for funding bookmobile operations and comfortable furnishings for the library's Front Room.
