Members' Corner: January 2006

Keep up on the achievements of your colleagues. Member's Corner will publish the first Friday of each month.

Hurricane Relief

NSLS has adopted the Jefferson Parish Library in Metairie, LA on behalf of NSLS libraries who wish to help these libraries who have suffered so much as a result of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. We are in almost weekly contact with Jefferson Parish Library officials and they are very grateful for the many boxes of books and checks that we've sent them. In addition, we have asked the Jefferson Parish Libraries to create a wish list for items they need. View wish list information.

Below is a list of what's been donated during December. Check the October, November, and December Member's Corner for previous announcements. We commend all of our libraries for being so helpful and supportive during this difficult time for those struck by the hurricanes. To be included in next month's Member's Corner, contact Christina Johnson.

  • Deerfield Public Library's partnership effort with the Village of Deerfield and State Representative Karen May's office to send Katrina relief resulted in the sending over 15,000 carefully selected books as well as $36,000 to the schools of Pass Christian, Mississippi. The Waukegan Public Library 's 43-year old bookmobile is going to Jefferson Parish, Louisiana as perhaps the largest gift they've ever received, and probably one of the most surprising this year. The bookmobile is filled to capacity with over 300 boxes of books donated by the Friends groups of the Lake Forest Library, Vernon Area Public Library, Warren-Newport Public Library, and the Wilmette Public Library. Plans are being made for her delivery via a freight train and no final timetable is ready.
