Scholarly Writing for the LIS Profession

The Graduate School of Library and Information Science, University of Illinois, is pleased to offer Scholarly Writing for the LIS Profession, an online, non-credit continuing education course open to anyone, March 16 - May 4. Online synchronous sessions are Tuesdays, 2-3 p.m. (NOTE: The March 16 session will be from 2-4.) The course introduces students to the major genres of scholarly writing, primarily through writing/editing assignments and discussion of essential elements and approaches. Topics include general introduction to scholarly writing and editing; practice with writing abstracts, reviews, editorials, columns, and other opinion pieces; reporting the results of case studies, best practices, surveys, and focus group research; and writing discipline focused scholarly articles. Assignments will consist of reading and critiquing an example of the genre in question, and writing in that genre. Instructor: Robert H. Burger, Ph.D., CPA, Professor Emeritus, GSLIS. Cost: $200. Leadership qualities include a commitment to dynamic library service, excellent interpersonal skills, an interest and skill in grant writing, and a willingness to play a role in the life of the community.
