The Illinois School Library Media Association recently sponsored a study
designed to determine the impact of school libraries on student test
scores. The results are startling. School libraries make a difference.
The study results indicate schools
throughout Illinois that had the highest test scores also had school
libraries that reflected collaborative learning between teachers, librarians
and students, an adequately staffed team of librarians and support staff,
and a budget to purchase books and electronic media.
In an effort to provide viewers
with information about this study, What's New in Libraries? ,
has devoted its June program to visiting Olive-Mary Stitt Elementary
School in Arlington Heights, Ivy Hall School in Buffalo Grove, the Roycemore
School and Evanston Township High School in Evanston, and Central Elementary
School in Wilmette to see exactly what is taking place in school libraries.
After touring the schools, Sarah
Ann Long, Director of the North Suburban Library System and host of
What's New In Libraries? said, "I would say that school libraries
not only result in good test scores, libraries result in good life scores!
It is important to visit your library either in person or online and
find out what's new."
