Library and Community Leaders Honored by Library System

In recognition of exceptional contributions to library service, library advocacy efforts and innovative partnerships, the North Suburban Library System (NSLS) has announced the winners of its 2004 Membership Awards. The award recipients will be honored at the annual NSLS banquet on March 18 at the Chevy Chase Country Club in Wheeling.

The WAUCONDA AREA PUBLIC LIBRARY DISTRICT has been recognized as Library of the Year. "The library's vision of service, as well as their understanding of the need to stay competitive and vital as a community resource, are examples for all to follow," says NSLS Director Sarah Long.

Also to be honored at the NSLS Annual Membership Awards Banquet are:

Academic Library Staff Member: David Bishop, University Librarian, Northwestern University, EVANSTON

Public Library Staff Member: Carolyn Anthony, Director, Skokie Public Library, SKOKIE

School Library Staff Member: Karrie LaMay, Media Center Director, Roycemore School, EVANSTON

Special Library Staff Member: Penny Sympson, Corporate Librarian, Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates, Inc., NORTHBROOK

Legislator of the Year: State Representative Louis Lang (D-16)

Innovation Award: Cook Memorial Public Library District, LIBERTYVILLE

Trustee of the Year: Noreen Lake, Des Plaines Public Library, DES PLAINES

Trustee of the Year: Larry Cahall, Indian Trails Public Library District, WHEELING

Volunteer of the Year: Robb Lang, Fremont Public Library District, MUNDELEIN

Community Advocate: Irene Overman Kreer, Glenview Library Association, GLENVIEW

Lifetime Achievement Award: Richard E. Thompson, Director (retired), Wilmette Public Library District, WILMETTE

Library staff and trustees submitted award nominations and the winners were selected by a panel of NSLS member libraries.
