The Illinois Press Association (IPA) provided a big boost of support
for Illinois libraries with the recent launch of "What's New in Libraries,"
a collection of columns on statewide library topics on the IPA Web site.
The columns are authored by Sarah Long, director of the North Suburban
Library System (Wheeling, IL). The columns are available free of charge
to IPA members, and may be viewed and downloaded at www.il-press.com.
All of the library columns being
offered by the IPA were previously published in the Daily Herald, the
third largest paper in Illinois. The newspaper began running Long's
weekly column in April 2001.
The Illinois Press Association
was founded in 1865 to represent newspapers throughout the state. Since
that time, the association has grown to include nearly all of Illinois'
600-plus daily and non-daily newspapers - the largest statewide press
association in the United States.
A number of Illinois libraries
have developed partnerships with their local newspapers, which involve
regular publication of columns by library staff. For many more, time
constraints make contributions to their newspaper problematic. Use of
the "What's New in Libraries" columns provides an opportunity for increased
awareness for libraries and doesn't cost a thing - in time or money.
The North Suburban Library
System is an organization of 650 academic, public, school and special
libraries in the north suburban Chicago area. It is one of 13 library
systems in Illinois, funded through the Illinois State Library.
