Library and Community Leaders Honored by Library System

In recognition of exceptional contributions to library service, library advocacy efforts and innovative partnerships, the North Suburban Library System (NSLS) has announced the winners of its 2003 Membership Awards. The award recipients will be honored at the annual NSLS banquet on March 12 at Concorde Banquets in Kildeer.

The DES PLAINES PUBLIC LIBRARY has been recognized as Library of the Year. "The library's services for diverse populations, as well as their fundraising and marketing efforts, serve as models for libraries everywhere. Creatively melding talent and strong community partnerships, the Des Plaines Public Library demonstrates just how high a library can soar," says NSLS Director Sarah Long.

Also to be honored at the NSLS Annual Membership Awards Banquet are:

Academic Library Staff Member: Judith Mayzel, Professor of Library Services, Oakton Community College, DES PLAINES

Public Library Staff Member: Frances Roehm, SkokieNet Librarian, Skokie Public Library, SKOKIE

School Library Staff Member: Barbara Stretch, Library Media Specialist, Plum Grove Junior High, ROLLING MEADOWS

Special Library Staff Member: Roberto Sarmiento, Head, Transportation Library, Northwestern University, EVANSTON

Legislator of the Year: State Senator Susan Garrett (D-29)

Innovation Award: Oakton Community College, DES PLAINES

Trustee of the Year: Paul Kaplan, Elk Grove Village Public Library, ELK GROVE VILLAGE

Volunteer of the Year: Harold Weary, Mount Prospect Public Library, MOUNT PROSPECT

Community Advocate: Pete Nenni, Lake County editor/manager, Daily Herald

Community Advocate: Jim Sorenson, Language Arts Teacher, Chippewa Middle School, DES PLAINES

Lifetime Achievement Award: Kathleen Balcom, Executive Librarian, Arlington Heights Memorial Library, ARLINGTON HEIGHTS
