The groundhog will not be the
only one seeing his shadow on February 2, 2004. Students from high schools
within the North Suburban Library System (Illinois) will be meeting
with and shadowing librarians from academic, public, school and special
libraries on Job Shadow Day.
"Job Shadow Day can be effective
in more than one way," says Sarah Ann Long, director of the North Suburban
Library System. "It has been established that personal contact is the
most persuasive way to recruit to the library profession. This day is
also a great way to inform future advocates about the many ways the
library serves their community."
NSLS staff is working with high
school counselors to recruit students for area libraries interested
in serving as hosts. Libraries interested in participating register
on the NSLS Job Shadow Day Web site (www.nsls.info/jobshadow/). The
site features librarians talking about what drew them to the "library
biz." Featured librarians include American Library Association President
Carla Hayden, Northwestern University Librarian David Bishop, and Nancy
Pearl, author of "Book Lust" and model for the librarian action figure.
Headquartered in Wheeling, the
North Suburban Library System is an organization of over 650 academic,
public, school and special libraries in the north suburban area of Cook
County and communities in Kane, Lake and McHenry counties. It is one
of 12 library systems in Illinois, funded through the Illinois State
Library, a division of the Office of the Secretary of State.
