Library and Community Leaders Honored by Library System

In recognition of exceptional contributions to library service, library advocacy efforts and innovative partnerships, the North Suburban Library System (NSLS) has announced the winners of its 2002 Membership Awards. The award recipients will be honored at the annual NSLS banquet on March 21 at the Northbrook Hilton. Chicago Tribune Deputy Managing Editor James Warren will be the guest speaker.

In addition to NSLS member libraries and staff, U.S. Senator Richard Durbin has been recognized as Legislator of the Year. "Senator Durbin has put the spotlight on the importance of reading in early childhood education with regular visits to Illinois school and public libraries. His support and enthusiasm inspires and energizes Illinois libraries," says NSLS Director Sarah Long.

Also to be honored at the NSLS Annual Membership Awards Banquet are:

Library of the Year : Rolling Meadows Library, ROLLING MEADOWS

Academic Library Staff Member : Barbara Brattin, LTA Coordinator, College of Lake County, GRAYSLAKE

Public Library Staff Member : Bill Pardue, Electronics Specialist, Arlington Heights Memorial Library, ARLINGTON HEIGHTS

School Library Staff Member : Shelley Riskin, Library Media Director, Pleasant Ridge School, GLENVIEW

Special Library Staff Member : Mary Crompton, Site Librarian, Northrop Grumman Corporation, ROLLING MEADOWS

Innovation Award : Schaumburg Township District Library, SCHAUMBURG

Trustee of the Year : Marie Caviness, Grayslake Area Public Library District, GRAYSLAKE

Volunteer of the Year : Patricia Kretchmer, Manager of Homebound Services, Skokie Public Library, SKOKIE

Community Advocate : Emanual Bud, Skokie Advisory Commission on Disabilities, SKOKIE

Headquartered in Wheeling, the North Suburban Library System is an organization of 650 academic, public, school and special libraries in the north suburban area of Cook County and communities in Kane, Lake and McHenry counties. It is one of 12 library systems in Illinois, funded through the Illinois State Library, a division of the Office of the Secretary of State, Jesse White.
