In recognition of her high profile
contributions to community partnerships and the library profession,
North Suburban Library System Director Sarah Long has been named a 2002
Woman of Achievement by the YWCA of Lake County. Ms. Long will receive
her award at the Association's 24th Annual Benefit on April 19.
The YWCA award recognizes the accomplishments of women in eight areas:
arts, business, community volunteer education, entrepreneur, professions,
public service and racial justice. Long's award is for the Professions
category. This is the first time that a librarian has been recognized
for this award.
The mission of the YWCA is the empowerment of women and girls and the
elimination of racism. Long served as president of the American Library
Association (ALA) for the 1999-2000 term. During her term she appointed
a special committee to raise an endowment for the ALA's minority scholarship
program, The Spectrum Initiative. As past president, she currently chairs
this committee.
"It is a tremendous honor to be recognized by this prestigious
organization," says Long. "The mission of libraries closely
reflect the vision of the YWCA: peace, justice, freedom and dignity
for all people. The challenges of this work are great, but the reward
of seeing people succeed as a result of our work is a powerful inspiration."
Headquartered in Wheeling, the North Suburban Library System is an organization
of over 650 academic, public, school and special libraries in the north
suburban area of Cook County and communities in Kane, Lake and McHenry
counties. It is one of 12 library systems in Illinois, funded through
the Illinois State Library, a division of the Office of the Secretary
of State, Jesse White. For more information visit www.nsls.info.
