Library and Community Leaders Honored by Library System

In recognition of exceptional contributions to library service, library advocacy efforts and innovative partnerships, the North Suburban Library System (NSLS) honored the winners of its 2006 Membership Awards on Friday, March 17 at the Cotillion Banquets in Palatine.

The GAIL BORDEN PUBLIC LIBRARY DISTRICT (ELGIN) was announced as recipient of the Library of the Year award. “The library was recognized for its spirit of innovation, that has electrified the community and redrawn the picture of the public library as a community center,” said NSLS Director Sarah Long.

Five more award winners were announced at the NSLS Membership Awards Banquet:

Innovation Award: Waukegan Public Library, WAUKEGAN

Academic Library Staff Member: Connie Bakker, Dean, Library, College of Lake County, GRAYSLAKE

Public Library Staff Member: Kathleen Lovelace, Head of Special Services, Ela Area Public Library, LAKE ZURICH

School Library Staff Member: Penny Swartz, Information Resource Center Coordinator, Niles West High School, SKOKIE

Special Library Staff Member: Christine Pyle, Library Director, Lake County Discovery Museum, WAUCONDA

Previously announced winners also honored at the banquet:

Legislator of the Year: United States Representative JAN SCHAKOWSKY, 9th District

Trustee of the Year: Jan L. Tucker, Arlington Heights Memorial Library, ARLINGTON HEIGHTS

Volunteer of the Year: Karen and Dan Fox, Gail Borden Public Library District, ELGIN

Community Advocate: Daily Herald for the Big Ticket Reading Project

Lifetime Achievement Award: Michael Madden, Director, Schaumburg Township District Library, SCHAUMBURG

Staff and trustees of NSLS member libraries submitted award nominations and chose the winners through online voting.
