Celebrate Lincoln’s birthday this February with a unique exploration of his life from the comfort of your own home. Your private tour is courtesy of a special cable program: “Lincoln’s Legacy: The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum,” which features a tour of this world class facility which has had over 500,000 visitors since opening in April, 2005.

“Lincoln’s Legacy” is a special half hour edition of What’s New in Libraries?, hosted by Sarah Long, Director of the North Suburban Library System. Long is joined by Thomas F. Schwartz, Illinois State Historian, for an insightful tour of the 200,000 square foot museum.

Viewers will have the rare opportunity to learn how the museum was designed. With an emphasis on exhibits that are replicas of many sites that still exist in and around Springfield, visitors are then able to extend their learning outside of the museum.

Through the eyes of Mr. Schwartz, viewers will learn about Lincoln’s boyhood and his struggles to find time to read and learn. We will understand how Lincoln learned about slavery as he traveled from Illinois to New Orleans on the Mississippi River.

Ever heard of a courting couch? This is where Lincoln met and courted Mary Todd. Did you know Lincoln is the only President to hold a patent? On the tour, you’ll learn about a speech Lincoln gave which so outraged John Wilkes Booth that it drove Booth to say that it would be the last speech that Lincoln ever gave, and so it was.

Watch What’s New In Libraries? in February for more on the life of our 16th president. To find out when the show is airing in your community, visit www.whatsnewinlibraries.org. This program was generously underwritten by Demco (www.demco.com), serving library and school professionals since 1905.

What’s New in Libraries? is produced by the North Suburban Library System (www.nsls.info), based in Wheeling, and the Library Cable Network (www.librarytv.org).
