In recognition of an exceptional commitment to libraries and learners everywhere, the Lake County Discovery Museum Library has been named the 2008 Library of the Year by the North Suburban Library System.

The Library of the Year award is presented to one library for creative and effective practices that support outstanding service and serve as a role model for other libraries. The Lake County Discovery Museum Library was chosen for the award through voting of the staff and trustees of libraries in the North Suburban Library System (NSLS). The award includes a monetary prize of $1,000, sponsored by Frye Gillan Molinaro Architects.

“The Museum Library is a jewel that is highly valued by researchers from around the world,” said Sarah Long, NSLS executive director. “The library’s commitment to universal access has opened doors of knowledge to more people than we can imagine.”

The library staff energetically guides users of all ages through their unique historical collections, including Civil War diaries, photographs and artifacts from the Fort Sheridan U.S. Army post, local school histories, and the world’s largest public postcard collection. Many of these items have been expertly placed on the Digital Past website, freely accessed at www.digitalpast.org.

The library will be honored at the 16th annual NSLS Membership Awards Banquet on March 14. NSLS (www.nsls.info) is an organization of 650 academic, public, school, and special libraries in portions of Cook, Kane, Lake, and McHenry counties. It is one of nine multi-type Illinois library systems funded by yearly grants from the Illinois General Assembly.
